The Goodfellas Social Aid & Pleasure Club secondline parade rolled yesterday. I caught them about a block from our house and followed them for a few minutes just to get a taste of the secondline energy that I’ve missed since the spring. The Black Men of Labor parade on Labor Day is usually sort of the kickoff to the secondline parade season, but since that parade was canceled due to Gustav (and rescheduled for sometime in October–I just called Sweet Lorraine’s Jazz Club and the person answering the phone thought the parade has been scheduled for Oct. 26), the Goodfellas, featuring the Hot 8 Brass Band, kicked off the season, at least in my neighborhood.
